Ingrid works together with the staff at the Federación de Asociaciones Bautistas de Costa Rica (Federation of Baptist Associations of Costa Rica). As a social extension of the Centro Teológico Bautista del Caribe Panameño (Baptist Theological Center of the Panamanian Caribbean) in the community of Changuinola, Bocas del Toro, Panamá, she directs a tutoring and feeding program for elementary and high school students who have fallen behind in their studies. The program is held at Ingrid’s house, and many of the students come from a nearby slum that is without running water and electricity, and where the houses have mud floors and walls made from bamboo. She works with the students and their relatives in evangelism, social development and pastoral care.
She writes in a recent journal of one aspect of her ministry. “My name is Benjamin Oziel. I was born on March 12, 2016. My mom was raped by her own father, who is my grandfather and my dad. Although she did not believe it, my mom did not know she was pregnant with me, so I came into the world while she bathed in a ravine. God took care of my mom's life and mine, even though I only weighed 4 pounds.
“My grandfather is in prison and my mom is still in school because she wants to be the best mom for me by finishing high school and then go to college.
“I have some problems with my motor skills development, but I am working hard to be able to walk soon. During my exercise classes, they put me on the floor, they pull me up, and they sing to me. I move when they move me around, and I clap when they sing choruses to God.
“I play with my toys. I crawl chasing the dog around the missionary Ingrid's home where I live. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that she has cared for me since I was 16 days old! The students at the tutoring program in her house treat me as if I were their mascot. I am such a happy baby!
“I ask for your prayers because lately I have been getting very sick and I do not like feeling sick. Pray also for ‘Missio’ Ingrid: she worries so much about me. She is teaching me to love God, to pray and to sing praises to God as well. I cannot wait to see more of the world, even if they might call me mischievous.”
