Three years ago, if you would have told me that by 2014, I would be on my third mission journey, I would have looked at you like you had just swallowed a lizard! Yet, here I am, someone who absolutely hates hot weather, serving our Lord and his servants, in Thailand!
If you want to serve the Lord in mission and you are a non-traditional missionary, like me, (meaning you have only a limited time to serve, or for some reason cannot commit to five or more years,) volunteering through International Ministries Volunteers in Global Mission program is ideal. I am serving at Chiang Rai International Christian School (CRICS) as a teachers' assistant with an emphasis on ESL. We are a community school: a community of teachers, families and students working together in God's vineyard here in Thailand.
It is hard work in many ways, and the the hurdles are many, (the language, the climate, different food and we get homesick, sometimes), but worth every inconvenience and sacrifice.
The parents of these kids are involved in so many ministries in the Chiang Rai area. Many of the kids are 2nd and 3rd generation missionary families. Sharing and teaching is in their blood. I can see it in the way they treat each other, how they nurture younger kids, their respect for their teachers and for education.
I thank God for calling me to serve him, for the Grace he gives me every day, for sending me to this incredibly beautiful place as part of a wonderful, loving and caring family of believers. Go, Volunteer, Serve!
And about those lizards, I've become quite fond of them. About a dozen reside on the roof of my patio!
