International Ministries

A new opportunity

August 19, 2008 Journal

Dear friends,

MillerfliAs you know, we returned on June 19 from the Philippines for our second home assignment.  A primary reason for returning at this point was so that Ben and Chris could finish high school in the U.S.  Just before returning, we were contacted by the pastoral search committee of First Baptist Church of Moline, IL.  They were looking for pastoral leadership with strengths in preaching/teaching, interpreting the faith, pastoral care and counseling.  Well, this pretty much describes Debbie and me in terms of gifting.  At the end of June, we participated in a missions Sunday at the church, with also the opportunity to explore further the pastorate.

At the end of the weekend the search committee unanimously extended an invitation for Deb and me to serve as senior co-pastors.  This past Sunday, August 17, we led in morning worship in view of a call followed by the church's formal vote to call us.  To top things off, after lunch on Sunday with the search committee, our family stopped by the open house of a home on the market and found just what we were looking for! God is a God of surprises!

Things have been moving fast!  Ben and Chris registered for school last Friday and will start on this Thursday, August 21.  We are still trying to gather our earthly goods from the four corners of the world (or at least the States).  Our shipment from the Philippines has already landed in Waco, Texas so we must retrieve that.  We also have things in Atlanta, GA and Shawnee, OK.

Many, many thanks for all of your support over the last eight years.  The Lord has used your prayers, encouragement and financial support to carry us through.  It is our hope that we may return to the Philippines one day as missionaries of American Baptist International Ministries.  If you don't mind we would enjoy keeping you updated about our journey along the way.

Although we will no longer be International Ministries missionaries to the Philippines, there are still opportunities to support our ministry.  There are many students at the Asia Baptist Graduate Theological Seminary and the Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary in Baguio City who greatly benefit from your support.  If you would like to continue to support this vital ministry of leadership development, you may send your gifts as "scholarship funds for ABGTS/PBTS" to International Ministries.

Truly words cannot express our gratitude for the partnership you've shared with us in equipping leaders for Asia.  Flint's recovery from the Achilles tendon surgery has gone well.  He walks great but must wait until October to exercise.  Thanks for all your prayers for healing.

We treasure your friendship and look forward to staying in touch in the future.
